Volunteer and Make a Difference! PDF Print E-mail

KidsRollingTireFORCE invites you to participate in one or more volunteer projects.  We offer a variety of fun, educational, and rewarding volunteer experiences.  Try an outdoor activity, such as trash cleanup or invasive plant removal.  If you prefer to work inside, we have education, outreach, and advocacy opportunities, as well as office work.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet people who love Rock Creek and want to do their part to protect it.  There are actvities for kids to get outside and families to experience nature and how good it feels to work together on something that matters.

Clean-up Projects

FORCE is an active participant in the Alice Ferguson Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup.  In 2008, FORCE organized and promoted 53 cleanup teams, who removed over 2,500 bags of trash, plus loose items (including 168 tires!), totalling nearly 30 tons, from the parkland along Rock Creek.  A number of smaller, more localized cleanups occur throughout the year.  Please check our calendar or contact Kevin Flynn, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Stream Teams

We are looking for volunteers to join our stream team program.  Stream teams are involved in active monitoring and protection of a stretch of Rock Creek or one of its 30 tributaries.  Teams also assist FORCE with advocacy and education efforts by being a voice in their communities.

In consultation with FORCE, stream team leaders select a tributary to Rock Creek or a section of the main creek near their neighborhood that they would like to monitor on a regular basis.  We ask that stream team leaders commit to the following activities:

  1. Walk the section or tributary as frequently as possible to keep an eye out for any issues that may negatively impact the health of the stream

  2. Report problems to the proper authorities and FORCE

  3. Complete at least two trash cleanups per year, if needed, one of which can be the Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup

  4. Organize at least one restoration/advocacy project per year.  This can be any number of projects, and we welcome new and creative ideas!  Examples include planting native trees or shrubs, removing invasive weeds, or educating your neighbors about stormwater management.

Public Outreach

Do you enjoy meeting new people?  Are you outgoing and interested in teaching others about the Rock Creek watershed and FORCE?  If so, we need your help with our public outreach efforts!

FORCE is frequently invited to host a booth at local fairs, park festivals, and greening events.  We are looking for volunteers to spread the word at these valuable public outreach opportunities.

Please let us know if you would like to be the voice of the FORCE at a local event.  Outreach volunteers receive a training packet with information about the Rock Creek watershed and FORCE’s efforts to improve our waterways.  We will provide you with all necessary visual displays and brochures, and you will be teamed with an experienced volunteer.

Help spread the word!  Please contact Barbara Elkus at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you'd like to volunteer or find out more information.
