FORCE invites you to join or form a neighborhood Stream Team to adopt a stretch of Rock Creek or one of its 30 tributaries.
The world's most important park is the one near you--where you can escape and reconnect with nature. You may even have a favorite spot--where you walk your dog, ride your bike, take a run, have a picnic, or experience the quiet beauty of the park.
If you love Rock Creek or enjoy a special spot in the park and want to help protect it, please adopt that section of park by joining one of our Stream Teams or starting a new one. A number of Stream Teams are already in place, and we are working to organize even more. This is a wonderful opportunity for neighborhood volunteers who want to take an active role in monitoring and protecting “their” section of Rock Creek.
It’s easy to do! The first step is to identify an area near where you live or work that you would like to adopt. Click for a map of Rock Creek and a list of its tributaries. Then contact FORCE to see if that area is adopted. If it is, you can join the existing Stream Team. If it hasn't been adopted, one adult volunteer can sign up as a Stream Team Leader. Two volunteers can co-lead, if desired. FORCE will work with you to help delineate the boundary of the area you would like to adopt. Read our Stream Team Leader Guidelines here.
Stream Team Leaders commit to undertake the following activities:
- Walk the creek section or tributary frequently to look for any issues that may negatively impact the health of the stream.
- Report problems to the proper authorities and FORCE.
- Organize at least two trash cleanups per year, if needed. One cleanup should be the annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup in early April.
- Organize at least one restoration or advocacy project per year. These projects can include planting native trees or shrubs, removing invasive plants, or educating your neighbors about stormwater management. New and creative ideas are welcome!
You can invite friends, neighbors, schools, scout troops, and commmunity groups to join at any time and we encourage you to work with groups with an interest in Rock Creek!
FORCE will provide Stream Team Leaders with training, resource materials, and park contacts to support program activities. The teams will work closely with and with permission from park personnel for any events on park property.
Our Stream Team Program is supported by a generous grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust.
