Enjoy the Parks! PDF Print E-mail

A lot of people think there is one Rock Creek Park.  Not true!  There are numerous parks in the Rock Creek watershed.

Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, is the largest park.  Although the creek, the forest, and the paths extend continuously, Rock Creek becomes a county park at the DC/Maryland line.  Montgomery County has four major county parks along Rock Creek, as well as numerous smaller neighborhood parks.  The Rock Creek watershed also has one Maryland state park, Matthew Henson State Park, which features a lovely four-mile hiker-biker trail along Turkey Branch, a tributary of Rock Creek.

There are also lots of ways for kids, families, and adults to reconnect with nature and enjoy the parks.  Here are some ideas:

  • Hiking--there are miles of paved and unpaved trails, including the13.6-mile Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail extending from Lake Needwood to the District line
  • Biking--Paved bike paths abound
  • Horsebackriding
  • Boating--rowboats, pedal boats, canoes, and boat tours at Lake Needwood
  • Birdwatching
  • Fishing--at Lake Needwood and Lake Frank
  • Nature study
  • Picnicking
  • Tennis
  • Golf--Rock Creek Golf Course, Needwood Golf Course, and five others
  • Sitting--you don't actually have to DO anything
